THE GREAT RED OAK

From New System to Working Quest

Asked to step into an unfamiliar system, I began learning Unreal Engine 5 from the ground up and moved from observation to hands-on quest implementation within my first month. The Great Red Oak became an early proving ground for that growth, requiring me to connect dialogue, interaction logic, Blueprint behavior, world-state changes, visual effects, and player choice into one reliable sequence.

Iteration, Testing, and Debugging

I implemented and tested the sequence in Unreal Engine 5, investigating interaction failures, dialogue interruptions, data-layer behavior, object visibility, and transition timing. Play-in-editor testing exposed issues that were not always visible in the asset setup, including missing interaction prompts, interrupted dialogue, and objects disappearing unexpectedly. I used controlled comparisons, Blueprint inspection, and repeated tests to isolate one variable at a time and improve the reliability of the complete player-facing sequence.

Narrative Goal

The Great Red Oak is a side quest built around environmental storytelling, player interaction, and a meaningful change to the game world. The objective was to connect written dialogue, an interactable notice, player choice, visual effects, and the physical state of the tree into one coherent narrative sequence.

Production and implementation challenge

The quest required several dependent elements to behave as one experience. The interaction needed to initiate the correct dialogue, the notice and supporting props had to remain visually connected to the environment, and the tree and its effects needed to respond correctly to the player’s decision. Small failures in timing, references, Blueprint logic, or asset setup could interrupt the complete sequence.

The sequence demonstrates the connection between environmental storytelling, player interaction, dialogue, quest-state logic, visual effects, and continued narrative progression. Captured from the in-development project and presented with permission from Hip Flask Games.

Finished sign post with quest interact to direct the player to the tree interaction.
